The Lorain County Historical Society was organized on January 26, 1889. The society displayed articles in various locations between 1889 and 1975. In 1975 the former home of Arthur L. Garford, a Lorain County industrialist, was purchased. Located at 509 Washington Avenue his house, The Hickories, serves as the headquarters and museum for the Society to this day.
Between 1947 and 1988 the Society also secured title to several other historical properties to include North Ridgeville's Cahoon House, the Sally Bronson House in Columbia Station, the Lorain Lighthouse, and Elyria's Laundon House. These properties have all been transferred to other groups and thanks to the Lorain County Historical Society still exist
Today the Society provides activities and programs throughout the area. They also operate the museum, a research library, and have archives available for researchers.
For additional information or to become involved in the society call (440) 322-3341 or email thehickories@alltel.net.

Avon Lake's "The 45's" Historic Cottage District
City leaders in Avon Lake, Ohio have approved the creation of what could be Ohio's first "Cottage District". Well known in Lorain County, the "45's" area is made up primarily of quaint cottages (approx. 600) remaining from Avon Lake's history as a summer vacation area for Clevelanders. Stop 45 was the trolley stop for the neighborhood.
By zoning the neighborhood as a "Cottage Residence District" the residents will preserve the charming feel of the neighborhood. Mature trees and quaint gardens create a feeling of neighborhood remenicent of a past era. Cottages will not be permitted to exceed 26 ft. in height.
"The 45's" is located east of Lear Rd. and south of Lake Rd.
This is an excellent example of neighborhood residents who love their neighborhood taking steps to preserve it's unique character.

Lorain County is alive!
Welcome!
There are some wonderful things to see and do in Lorain County. From our metroparks (fantastic asset - and the people seem to support the system) to our beaches. Quaint business areas like downtown Amherst to new shopping areas like Avon Commons. Culture abounds with Oberlin College (wonderful underappreciated art museum) and Stocker Center.
We still have rural areas - which need to be preserved, and we also have urban areas like downtown Lorain and Elyria that could be wonderful again (if Crocker Park works, why not downtown Lorain and Elryia???).
History assets abound, from the Lorain County Historical Society to the wonderful little one room school house in Grafton Township (Belden).
There are many, many blogs out there that are negative, often dominated by a half dozen people who like to attack people and ideas and "out shout" anyone that doesn't agree with them. They must spend hours and hours - don't they work?
The positive community wins - and in this time of regionalization Lorain County needs to put it's best foot foward. As I get the time I'm going to try to point out some of the wonderful attributes we have, and in the process I hope to discover more that I'm not aware of.
